Dr. Inkyu Kang is an assistant professor of digital journalism at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Dr. Kang is also an award-winning journalist/writer/translator. As a journalist, he has been writing extensively about technology and culture, receiving the “Journalist of the Year” award in 2008. His columns, articles, and photos were published as an anthology in the same year.

At Penn State Behrend, Dr. Kang teaches Mass Media and Society, Applications for Media Writing, Introduction to Graphic Design, and Introduction to Multimedia Production. Before joining Penn State Behrend, he taught Introduction to Television, Popular Culture, and East Asian Civilizations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include visual communication, cultural studies, and new media technologies. He is currently doing research on the ideological function of technical codes such as camera distance, angle, and image alterations. In between teaching and doing research, Dr. Kang has served as the advisor to the Behrend Beacon.

He has recently contributed a chapter on Japan’s mobile Internet to Global Media Convergence and Cultural Transformation: Emerging Social Patterns and Characteristics (2010, Hershey, PA: ICI Global). As a translator, he translated Daniel Chandler’s Semiotics: The Basics (2003, London: Routledge) into Korean. Before he entered academia, he worked for a design company, freelancing as a newspaper cartoonist and illustrator.
