America Reads

America Reads

America Reads is a national campaign calling on all Americans - parents, educators, libraries, universities, religious institutions, the media, senior citizens, business leaders, and community and national groups - to help every child learn to read well and on their own. The federal government has encouraged college work-study students to play a vital role in this initiative.

Any Penn State Behrend student who has been awarded Federal Work-Study may get paid to work as an America Reads tutor. The program is especially interested in individuals who value community service and are enthusiastic about helping young children learn the joys and rewards of reading.

Penn State Behrend has three local America Reads tutoring sites: Wesleyville, Diehl, and Klein Elementary Schools in Erie. All tutors must provide their own transportation to and from the sites. America Reads tutors are paid $11.00/hour from their Federal Work-Study award. All tutors will have their paychecks directly deposited into their checking or savings account.
