When the Whole World Was at War

Are you a history buff? Did your grandparents or great-grandparents live through World War II? Join us as we travel back in time to examine this profound period in history. We'll examine the risks, the “what ifs,” and the major players—Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin. We'll research Nazi propaganda, the Holocaust, and weapons of mass destruction. You'll have an opportunity to voice your opinion during class debate. We'll even build our own plane and hold our own mock trial!

Junk Journaling NEW

Gather your photos, some bits of memorabilia and some "junk" and together we will learn how to make a "Junk Journal" out of an old book and everyday supplies. Sharpen your math skills while measuring and cutting paper and learning to crop and mount photos while your create your own journal. Please bring 10-15 photos.

Stop Motion Video Animation with Legos

This action packed week will include the animation of objects created by students using polymer clay as well as LEGO Mini-Figures, bricks, and accessory items. All materials and equipment will be provided including Batman LEGO mini figures and props. Students are encouraged to bring their own LEGOS and props if they want to create a specific animation with their favorite characters.  All completed animations will be burned to a high quality DVD disc and each student will receive a copy to keep.

Star Wars and the Roman Empire

Whether a film critic or a history buff, this class is for you. You’ll discover the history behind Star Wars and its creator, George Lucas. Learn how the plot of Star Wars mimics real-life history in Rome roughly 2,000 years ago. This class will  recognize and discuss the huge impact this film had in the world not only in the late 1970s but also upon its return as another huge hit in the 1990s. Join us as we delve into history, and may the force be with you! Please note that Rebel Alliance or Galactic Empire attire is optional!

Yoga, Zumba, and Healthy You

An important part of being healthy is achieving energy balance:  eating and drinking (energy in) to provide the right amount of fuel our bodies need for healthy growth, everyday living, and physical activity (energy out).  Participants will focus on both of these energies through daily YOGA, ZUMBA, and discussions on body image and eating well.  Our motto will be "Everything in Moderation".  A yoga mat and strap will be given to each participant to keep.

Join us for this unique, fun and creative dance and science experience. Kirsten's Prairie Picnic NEW

Come and explore what pioneer life was like!  How big IS a covered wagon?  What was learning like in a one-room school?  Come and make a lunch basket, an apron and a rag doll that a Prairie girl like Kirsten might have. Bring Kirsten or your own pioneer doll and wrap up the week with a picnic!

Introduction to RC Quadcopters and Aerial Photography

How do drones work? What can you do with them? Come Learn how to operate your own quadcopter and see the possibilities. Students will receive a Dromida KODU HD Quadcopter with camera in the class and learn to fly it, take pictures and video. Learn how to use a computer flight simulator to practice flying. Participants will take home their Quadcopters at the end of the week.

Storm Chasing 101

Study extreme weather with WJET meteorologist Tom Atkins. Learn about various types of storms, such as snow storms, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. Discover how to spot severe storms by viewing cloud formations and using Doppler radar. We'll study tornado-chasing, talk to a real storm chaser and end the week with a field trip to the WJET-TV studios and weather offices.

Intermediate Robotics

Are you ready for the next robotics challenge? Intermediate robotics will focus on design, motion, structure, power, sensors, and programming involved in building robots. Two robotics platforms will be used: Mindstorm and Vex Robotics kits.

Become a Champion Engineer

Participants will learn to use engineering principles to take on a variety of exciting engineering challenges and test their solutions in competitive games.  Participants will win prizes for whomever creates the catapult that flings marshmallows the farthest, makes a  hovercraft that glides closest to the target, or builds the tower that stands the tallest.  There will be multiple challenges everyday as boys and girls win points toward the Champion Engineer Award at the week's end.

Roller Coaster Physics

Why do we like to ride rollercoasters? Many people think it’s for the thrill of speed. But for most people it's actually the twists, turns, drops and spins that keep us in line for hours to experience mere minutes of excitement. Learn about forces, energy transformation and mass relationship using the K'Nex building system to construct a large rollercoaster. Experience first-hand the design considerations in building a safe but thrilling ride. A behind the scenes trip to Waldameer will be the capstone of the course.

It's My Business; Be an Entrepreneur with Junior Achievement

If entrepreneurship is behind our country's economic success, then what's behind entrepreneurship itself? Can someone learn to think and act like an entrepreneur? Most definitely. This Junior Achievement program teaches students the four key characteristics of successful entrepreneurs: believing in themselves; filling a need; knowing their customer and product; and being creative and innovative.

The Great Cake Bake

Go backing crazy! We'll design an all edible display with the theme of your choice. This class will use basic kitchen skills while learning advanced design and decorating techniques and take baking a simple cake to a new level. Participants will experience day to day bakery operations with a visit to a local bakery. *Peanuts may be used in cooking classes*

Engineering Explorers with 3D Printers NEW

Explore plastics, software, electrical and materials engineering fields. Participants will utilize CAD programming and Makerbot 3D Printers to design products in the one of the fastest growing fields in technology. They will also experiment with Thermoforming, learn how to stress-test multiple  materials and discover how to turn everyday objects into touch pads for a week of fun engineering exploration.

CSI-Crime Scene Investigations!

Learn how science is used to solve crime by using experimental techniques in a laboratory-based setting.  Participants will analyze evidence such as hair, fibers, fingerprints, blood, and blood splatter.  Death and decay, shoe impressions, handwriting, and ink analysis will also be studied. Participants will learn laboratory-based techniques used to solve crimes.

Improv

Join us as we play some classic improv games and exercises geared for young actors. These games will help you build your ability to think fast whether you are on stage or in a classroom and learn about theatre in a fun and hilarious way. This class will culminate in a performance modeled after the improv based show "Whose Line is it Anyway." This fun performance might even draw in the audience to participate!

Based on Discovery Channel’s  hit TV show “MythBusters,” this class explores engineering concepts ”just to see what happens.” Which type of racing car goes faster? What are the different kinds of bridges, are they safe, and how do we build one? How does an electric circuit work? We will have design contests, explore the college’s engineering facilities, and have lots of fun. This class is for all girls and boys who want to learn about the different fields of engineering.

Using the STEAM Machines program, participants will be challenged to learn and apply the engineering design process to build chain reaction STEAM Machines in a project-based, cooperative learning environment. This course will teach participants real-world engineering skills, provide experience with systems thinking and multi-team collaboration, and create a pathway to better understand careers in engineering.

Beginner Model Rocketry

Explore the exciting world of model rocketry. Following strict safety rules, participants will build a reusable model rocket  they will launch during class and then again at home. Participants will design their own launch system which will include a wooden launch pad and electronic ignition system. Family members will be invited to watch participants successfully launch their rockets on the final day of class.

Acting for the Stage 2

This class picks up right where Acting for the Stage I lets off. Participants will learn through games and acting exercises how to bring the characters in a script to life. Intro to DC Circuits

Perhaps nothing is more representative of modern technological culture than electronic devices.  But how do these mysterious "black boxes" really work?  This course represents an overview of the fundamentals of DC circuits, simple components like resistors, capacitors, and transistors.  Participants will also design and test simple circuits on breadboards, which they will take home at the end of the week.  Basic familiarity with algebra and one variable in a simple equation is assumed for this course.

This class is designed to give the young artist a better grasp on drawing more realistic. We will work with pencils and colored pencils. Shading, perspective, and texture techniques will be introduced to create realistic looking fur, wood surfaces and metal.
