High school students ages 14-18 enjoy a day of career exploration across multiple disciplines.

High School Academy will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

This comprehensive career exploration day is designed to help high school students (ages 14-18) answer the following questions:

  • What do I want to do after high school?
  • What should I choose as my college major?
  • How does this major translate into a real job?

Participants will explore multiple academic majors and career possibilities through hands-on activities.

A Hands-On Interactive Program

The world around us is all about companies and products—whether that product is a cellphone, a book, or a meal. So, how does a product get to the consumer? How many different jobs are related to that product? This day-long program will follow a product from beginning to end while showcasing resources here at Penn State Behrend.

High school students will spend the day moving from one end of campus to the other, exploring majors across all disciplines.

  • Start the day with an idea: "How do you decide on what the next new product is?" Work with Black School of Business faculty and students in the Innovation Commons to identify the product, target market, pricing, and patents needed to determine commercial viability.
  • Move over to our School of Humanities and Social Sciences to design a marketing campaign and consider the ergonomics of the product and the psychology of the buyer.
  • Bring your product to life in the School of Engineering. How will it be manufactured? What materials will you use in design and production? How do these decisions play into product pricing?
  • Now test your design in the School of Science labs. How does the performance of your product compare to the competition? Can your product be optimized to meet consumer needs?

These activities will take advantage of Penn State Behrend's state-of-the-art equipment that, in some cases, may be unique to northwestern Pennsylvania.

Optional Parents-Only Workshop

Admissions and Financial Aid representatives will present an optional parents-only workshop from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The workshop will help parents guide their teenagers as they move forward toward their college and career path. We will help parents answer:

  • What is the next step for my high school student?
  • How do they apply to college?
  • Where do we go for financial aid?
