Mathematics Jobs

A degree in mathematics can lead to careers in fields such as actuarial planning, computer systems design, software engineering, information systems, mathematical biology, mathematics education, operations research, programming management, quality control analysis, system analysis, and technical writing. The demand for mathematicians is projected to be strong. A shortage of science teachers, a growing need for actuarial specialists, and demand for greater computer network efficiency and for fast, accurate decision-making in international markets suggest good careers for those in mathematics.

Graduates may also continue their studies to earn master’s or doctoral degrees in pure math, applied math, or other technical fields.

Who Hires Mathematics Majors?

Recent Behrend graduates found jobs as an associate research analyst Edelman Intelligence, a service delivery coordinator at CSC, and an IT consultant at FDM Group, and were accepted to graduate programs at Ohio State and SUNY Stony Brook.

Alumni with more experience include actuaries, statisticians, architects, software consultants, technical advisers, systems integration engineers, computer programmers, textbook authors, high school teachers, and university professors.

Career Planning

Penn State Behrend has a comprehensive support system that will help you to identify and achieve your goals for the college classroom and beyond. Meet with your academic adviser often and take advantage of the services offered by the Academic and Career Planning Center beginning in your first semester.

Internships and Co-ops

Students in the School of Science can incorporate an internship experience into their academic program. These professional, career-related experiences in an organizational setting are valuable for a student's professional career development, and students may receive academic credit that applies to their degree program.

In addition, Penn State's Eberly College of Science Cooperative Education Program provides an excellent opportunity for Penn State Behrend students to integrate academic study with relevant experience in the workplace through alternating semesters of work and study.

If you are a student looking for more information on co-op and internship listings and how to apply, please contact your advisor or the Academic and Career Planning Center.
