Behrend runners win top four spots at Tiffin Grand Prix

The Penn State Behrend men's track-and-field team won two events at the Tiffin Grand Prix. The Lions will compete in the Ohio State Elite meet beginning Feb. 16.

Runners from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, took the top four spots in the men’s 1,000-meter run at the Tiffin Grand Prix. Chris Drozynski, a sophomore from Stoneboro, finished first, with a time of 2:39.80. The women's team won three events.

 

The college’s basketball, volleyball, tennis and wrestling teams also competed last week. Here are the highlights:

 

Men’s basketball

Pitt-Bradford 65, Penn State Behrend 62

La Roche 61, Penn State Behrend 56

Dan Wanker, a junior from Pittsburgh, scored a game-high 17 points against Pitt-Bradford. Malike Brinson, a junior from Erie, added 14 points and two rebounds.

 

Women’s basketball

Penn State Behrend 77, Pitt-Bradford 71

La Roche 73, Penn State Behrend 53

The Lions shot 78.6 percent from the floor in the fourth quarter against Pitt-Bradford. Emily Kinecki, a junior from Erie, scored 21 points.

 

Men’s track and field

The Lions won the 4x400 relay at the Tiffin Grand Prix, finishing in 3:34.39. Braeden Smith, a freshman from Erie, set a personal record in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.99 meters. He qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships.

 

Women’s track and field

Savanna Carr, a freshman from Franklin, won the 1,000-meter run at the Tiffin Grand Prix, finishing in 3:15.89. Caitlin Plazony, a sophomore from Fairview, was second, with a time of 3:16.78.

Wittenberg 3, Penn State Behrend 1

Sage 3, Penn State Behrend 1

Anthony Sprentz, a junior from Cranberry Township, had 20 assists and 12 digs against Wittenberg. Dillon Hildebrand, a sophomore from Red Lion, had a team-best 14 kills.

 

Men’s wrestling

Sixth (of eight teams) at the PSUAC/USCAA Wrestling Invitational.

Jake Paulson, a freshman from Erie, placed second in the 184-pound weight class. He won by pin and by decision before losing in the final. Jacob Lenhardt, a freshman from McKean, placed second in the 285-pound weight class. He won twice by decision.

 

Men’s tennis

Baldwin Wallace 7, Penn State Behrend 2

Scott Russell, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, and Yanigue Apgar, a senior from Pittsburgh, won their doubles match, 9-7. Russell then won at singles with scores of 6-3, 5-7 and 10-4.
