BCF6 Teaching Loads and Semester-Long Sabbaticals

Sabbaticals at Penn State University are a privilege and are not automatically awarded. Faculty members must apply for sabbatical leaves, with the applications assessed and ranked by the college’s research committee. There is no separate budget for sabbaticals, and costs are only partially covered by salary savings from full-year sabbaticals.

For faculty members requesting semester-long sabbaticals at full pay, there are no salary savings to apply toward replacement instructors. To help defray costs of these leaves, faculty members must teach the higher of their semester teaching loads in the semester that they are here. For example, if a faculty member has a 3-2 teaching load by virtue of being a program chair, he or she would teach a three-course load for the semester that he or she is here.
