Lions lead in President’s Cup standings
The Penn State Behrend Lions claimed five of seven fall championships in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC). The college has a commanding lead in the 2016-17 President’s Cup standings after winning conference titles in men’s golf, women’s and men’s cross country, and women's and men’s soccer.
Highlights from the fall 2016 season
- Women’s and men’s soccer each had a player named to the All-American Team. Senior Evan Augustine was a first-team choice for the men and junior Olivia Belack was honored on the second team for women.
- The women's soccer team became the first team in AMCC history to win six straight championships.
- Cross-country runner Dylan Buffington was the individual AMCC Champion at the conference meet, leading the Lions to a first-place finish. Buffington, the AMCC Runner of the Year, went on to earn NCAA Mid-East All-Region honors as well.
- Women’s cross-country runner Riley Crissman was the AMCC Runner of the Year.
Coach news & notes
- Golf Digest named men’s golf coach Erik Barzeski one of the "Best Young Teachers in America" for 2016-17.
- Two head coaches, Dan Perritano (soccer) and Jeff Barger (tennis), each reached 400 career wins this past fall.
- Cross-country coach Greg Cooper was named AMCC Coach of the Year for both men’s and women’s cross country.
- Head baseball coach Paul Benim was named the 2016 Baseball Person of the Year by the Erie County Baseball Umpires.
7 Inducted into Hall of Fame
Seven former student-athletes have earned a place in Penn State Behrend's Athletics Hall of Fame. Brian Streeter, senior director of Athletics, joined the group to celebrate the accomplishments of Shane Elzer ’06 (baseball), Staci Banaszek-Rock ’06 (track and field), David Hairston’04 (basketball), Lisa Wagner Robertson ’07 (volleyball), Elaine Voltz ’07 (volleyball), Donald Hackworth ’06 (track and field), and Michelle Newland Scott ’06 (soccer).
