BCF17 Additional Expectations for Review of Sabbaticals

The purpose of this procedure is to augment the University’s sabbatical policy and expectations for review of sabbaticals. The University has outlined expectations and procedures for sabbaticals in two documents:

Due to increasing fiscal constraints and higher numbers of sabbatical requests, the college may only be able to support a limited number of sabbaticals in a given year. The college research committee will therefore consider additional factors when reviewing applications:

  • AC17 states that “a sabbatical is a privilege which may be granted to an individual who has demonstrated by publication, teaching, exhibition, or performance an above average ability in scholarship, research, or other creative accomplishment.” Demonstrated ability in scholarship, research, or other creative accomplishment will be a key criterion in evaluating an application.
  • In addition to presenting a strong case for subsequent sabbaticals through the application process, faculty members requesting follow-on sabbaticals must also demonstrate evidence of a strong record of performance in scholarship, research, or other creative accomplishment resulting from previous sabbaticals.
