BCF2 Internships

The purpose of this policy is to encourage greater faculty participation in the provision of internship experiences for students. Internship experiences are important to the personal and career development of students in their job placement success:

  • Faculty members supervising credit internship experiences during the academic year will be able to accrue/"bank" the student credit hours (SCH) they produce.
  • Faculty members who accrue 105 SCH or more in an academic year (equivalent to a 400-level course with 35 students) have the option of selecting a course release or obtaining funds for research and scholarly activities.
  • Faculty members who accrue less than 105 SCH may obtain funds for research and scholarly activities.
  • Pay for summer independent studies and internships will be $200 for each undergraduate credit and $225 for each graduate credit. Faculty members who teach internships/independent study courses in the summer will be issued contracts in August after all courses are completed and the class list and grades are received from the Registrar’s office. The compensation will be credited in the September pay. This policy includes the following categories: x94 = Research/credit courses; x95 = Internships; x96 – Independent Study; and x97 = Special Topics.
  • If a particular discipline reaches and sustains 105 SCH of internships each academic year, a course release may be built into the regular schedule.
  • Only courses with a 495 designation are considered internships. College of Education “practica” and students in the Medical Technology option at Saint Vincent Health Center are excluded from this accrual policy.
  • Each school and/or program needs to develop internship guidelines addressing GPA and semester standing requirements, course prerequisites, and evaluation methods. Copies of these guidelines and any subsequent changes to them should be forwarded to the Career Development Office.
  • The Career Development Office will have primary responsibility for recruitment of employers and students and preparing interns for placement. The Registrar’s Office will supply enrollment data to the schools and the Chancellor’s Office for the accrual system. Faculty responsibilities include determination of the credit-worthiness of the proposed internship, academic oversight and monitoring of the experience, and evaluation.
  • Each school must determine how internships are to be handled in terms of faculty assignments. The Career Development Office should be informed about the process employed by each unit.
  • Because faculty members are compensated directly, internships conducted in the summer do not fall under this policy.
