BCF19 Appointment and Renewal Lengths for Fixed-Term Multiyear Faculty

Purpose

To provide a reasonable balance between the ability to attract and retain fixed-term faculty members and the college’s ability to maintain academic excellence, flexibility, and equity.

Background

Non-tenure-line faculty members play an important role in the life of the college, particularly in the teaching and in the service and outreach missions of the institution. Therefore, it is important that the college be successful in attracting and retaining highly qualified faculty members. At the same time, the college needs to maintain the flexibility and responsibility to deal with all exigencies related to the hiring and the retention of fixed-term faculty members. The procedures below are consistent with University Policy AC21.

Procedure

  • One-year contracts will typically be used for such cases as sabbatical replacements, emergency replacements, resignations, failed tenure-track or multiyear searches, unexpected program growth, or other unusual circumstances that warrant single-year faculty hires.
  • Upon initial hiring, non-tenure-line faculty members in the first rank will typically begin with a two-year contract. While the faculty member remains in the first rank, all subsequent contracts shall typically be offered for a duration of two years, subject to the needs of the institution, continued high-level performance, and the approval of the Chancellor's Office.
  • Non-tenure-line faculty members who achieve the second and third rank (University Policy AC21) will be considered for a multiyear contract of length beyond two years, and those at the third rank will be given consideration for the maximum available contract length, subject to the needs of the institution, continued high-level performance, and the approval of the Chancellor's Office*.
  • All non-tenure-line faculty members are subject to extended reviews per Policy AC40 and Procedure BCF3.

* Faculty who achieved the second or third rank and/or a three- or five- year contract prior to September 30, 2018 will be “grandfathered” and typically will continue to receive three- or five- year contracts in the future, subject to the needs of the institution, continued high-level performance, and the approval of the Chancellor's Office.
