BCM9 Supplemental Teaching for Staff

Staff members occasionally receive requests from schools to teach courses at the college. The opportunity to engage in teaching is rewarding for the individual and often furthers college goals.

Teaching for staff is considered a supplementary activity except under explicit circumstances in which teaching is considered part of an individual’s regular college duties. In all cases, college employees should not teach more than one course during each academic year. The compensation rate is based on overload pay as illustrated in BCF23 Faculty Salary Procedures Related to Supplemental Compensation.

College employees wishing to teach supplemental courses must:

  1. seek supervisor approval before accepting an offer;
  2. complete their regular staff duties;
  3. conduct teaching and the duties that accompany it during supplementary hours, or make up the time missed; and
  4. avoid frequent or intense teaching assignments that can interfere with regular job requirements and expectations.

Exceptions to this policy must be approved by the Vice-Chancellor, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
