Prior to his retirement, Mr. David Johnson was an associate professor of engineering. Mr. Johnson received both the B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1978 and 1980 respectively from the Pennsylvania State University. He began his teaching career at Penn State Behrend, in 1992.

Mr. Johnson previously held the position of Mechanical Engineering Technology Chair. He had eleven years of industry experience before he began his teaching career. He began his engineering career at Boeing Aerospace Company then was employed by Airco Carbon, and Swanson Analysis Systems Inc. Mr. Johnson is a member of the Western PA ANSYS User’s Group, the Society for Experimental Mechanics, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He has received numerous awards including:

  • Recipient, Best of Session Technical Paper Award, “ANSYS Workbench Environment in Education,” Proceedings of the International ANSYS Conference and Exposition, Pittsburgh, PA, May 2006.
  • Nominated, Pennsylvania State University President’s Award for engagement with students, Spring 2002 and Spring 2003.
  • Recipient, session award for best paper, “Developing an ANSYS creep model for polypropylene from experimental data,” Proceedings of the International ANSYS Conference and Exposition, 2002.
  • Nominated, American Society of Mechanical Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Student Section Advisor’s Award, Spring 2002.
  • Recipient, session award for best paper, Three-dimensional modeling of a bolted connection, International ANSYS Conference and Exposition, Pittsburgh, PA, August 30, 2000.

  • “Man-Mile” Award and trophy plaque, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Region V Student Conference, Troy, MI, April 2-4, 1998. (The contest metric is the number of students who attend the conference, multiplied by the miles we travel to the conference)
  • Award of Special Recognition, Pennsylvania Technical Assistance Program (PENNTAP), for sharing my expertise, time, and support for the clients and staff of PENNTAP, 1997.
  • Recipient, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Allied Signal Contest, over 400 points award for the 1996-1997 academic year, Summer 1997. The points for this award are earned by the Student Section at Penn State Behrend.
  • Faculty Adviser Award, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), presented at the ASME Regional Student Conference, Athens, OH, April 1994.
