Biography
Dr. Omar Ashour is a professor of industrial engineering at Penn State Behrend, where he started working in fall 2013. He has previously held a post-doctoral appointment at Penn State University, University Park. Dr. Ashour received the B.S. degree in Industrial Engineering/Manufacturing Engineering and the M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in 2005 and 2007, respectively. He received his M.Eng. degree in Industrial Engineering/Human Factors and Ergonomics and the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from Pennsylvania State University (PSU) in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Dr. Ashour was the inaugural recipient of William and Wendy Korb Early Career Professorship in Industrial Engineering in 2016.
Research Interests
Dr. Ashour’s research is to investigate the application of data-driven decision-making for the improvement of healthcare and manufacturing systems. This is achieved by modeling problems and building decision-support tools using data analytic techniques, including simulation, to aid decision-makers in healthcare and manufacturing systems to make accurate and repeatable decisions with the main goal of improving safety and quality of care in healthcare systems while improving efficiency and productivity in manufacturing systems. In addition, Dr. Ashour's research involves using virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence, and gamification in the area of personalized and adaptive learning for design and engineering education.
