Teaching Philosophy

I find teaching to be one of the most exciting, fulfilling, and essential aspects of an academic career. Being able to convey my knowledge and experiences to the students and having the opportunity to influence their careers truly excite me.

I believe that learning can take place when students are strongly motivated to learn and are actively participating in discovering new knowledge. Teachers can facilitate this by providing all the means necessary to make students feel confident and excited about taking their individual journeys to discovery. My teaching philosophy is centered on four main goals: (1) motivate students to learn (2) help them achieve active-learning and thereby promote deep understanding and critical thinking, (3) create a learning-conducive environment that offers an enjoyable yet challenging learning experience, and (4) spark long-term interest.

To motivate the students to learn, I illustrate the relevance/importance of the topic, explain how the subject matter can be used in real-life situations, and provide opportunities to help them build their confidence to master the particular topic. Once all my students are ready, I hold them responsible for their own learning by utilizing active-learning strategies. In this direction, I challenge them by assigning tasks or theoretical/practical problems which require identifying the type of information that is needed, and learning where to look for this information and how to make the best use of it. I believe that active learning is well supported by group work. Several activities in my courses are done by working in groups. My goals include inducing collaborative learning, offering customized guidance for each of my students’ individual learning process, and reducing the stress of graded work.

My objective to foster critical-thinking is reflected in the way of assessing students. I do not want my students to memorize any concept or solution procedure in my courses. Open note/text, or single-page personal notes are generally permitted in the exams. This allows me to design questions to test whether the students became proficient in applying their knowledge to different situations, performing sound analysis, and making logical evaluations. I aim to create a safe and stimulating learning atmosphere, and I put effort in getting to know my students individually, starting with learning their names and specific needs or problems.

I believe that my mission in teaching is not limited to what I can give the students about the specific subject matter, but it also requires helping them build perspective and develop tools toward how they should identify, approach, and solve problems arising in different practical settings.
