Dr. Steven V. Hicks is Professor of Philosophy. As a native of southern Mississippi, he received his undergraduate degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, and his M.A, M. Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University in the City of New York. While a graduate student at Columbia University, Hicks was also a German Academic Exchange Scholar (DAAD) at the Ruhr Universität in Bochum, Germany. Prior to coming to Penn State Behrend in 2010, Dr. Hicks taught a variety of courses in philosophy, literature, humanities, and social and political theory at Columbia University, Concordia College, Queens College/CUNY, and the Graduate Center/CUNY. From 1996-2010 he was Professor and Chair of Philosophy of Queens College of the City University of New York. As Chair of Philosophy at Queens College, he had a hand in overseeing and coordinating a number of interdisciplinary programs, such as a major and minor in Religious Studies and an M.A. in Liberal Studies.

Dr. Hicks is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters on Hegel, Nietzsche, nineteenth-century German philosophy and literature, and social and political philosophy. His books include International Law and the Possibility of a Just World Order (1999), Mythos and Logos: How to Regain the Love of Wisdom (2004), The Challenges of Globalization: Rethinking Nature, Culture, and Freedom (2007), and Reading Nietzsche at the Margins (2008). From 2003-2005, Hicks served as President of the International Society for Universal Dialogue founded at Warsaw University, Poland; and from 2001-2004, he served on the board of editorial consultants for the History of Philosophy Quarterly. Currently he is the editor of the special book series Universal Justice published by Editions Rodopi, and he is on the editorial board of the “Hegelian Research Studies Series” published by the journal Clio: A Journal of Literature, History, and the Philosophy of History.

As the former director of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences from 2010-2015, Dr. Hicks worked with faculty to develop a new signature degree program in Arts Administration designed for students with an interest in the arts who want to pursue careers in the management of arts organizations. He also worked with faculty to develop a variety of certificate programs in the areas of Advertising, Public Relations, Legal Studies, Behavioral Health and Counseling Psychology, Child Development, as well as interdisciplinary programs in Game Development (with the School of Engineering), and Consumer Psychology (with the Black School of Business). Outside the office, his hobbies include music, hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing, cross-country skiing, and travel.
