Former Athletes Earn Places in Penn State Behrend Hall of Fame

Six former student-athletes will be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Sept. 28. Three teams also will be honored for their championship seasons.

 

Danielle Bemis will be inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 28.Danielle Bemis, a 2004 graduate, was a three-time All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference selection for the volleyball team. In her senior year, she broke program records for kills and digs and was named James Frye Female Athlete of the Year and John Zahniser Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. She also was chosen as Team MVP.

 

 

 

Jenny Detelich will be inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 28.Jenny Detelich, a 2000 graduate, excelled in both cross country and track. She held the college records for the 800m and 1500m and had a second-best time in the 3000m. She also won the John Zahniser Female Scholar Athlete Award.

 

 

 

 

Jacob Hordych will be inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 28.Jacob Hordych, a 2004 graduate, was one of the most successful men’s soccer goalies in the history of the college. He won All-AMCC honors in his sophomore, junior and senior years and, as team captain, set career records for shut-outs and games played.

 

 

 

 

Andy Laver will be inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 28.Andy Laver, a 2004 graduate, was a standout for the men’s soccer team. He was named AMCC Player of the Year and Team MVP in 2003, when he led the Lions to an AMCC championship and an NCAA tournament appearance. Laver, a three-time All-AMCC choice, finished his career ranked seventh in career goals, eighth in career points and 16th in career assists.

 

 

 

Ryan Seyler will be inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 28.Ryan Seyler, a 2003 graduate, was the first Penn State Behrend pitcher to be named a two-time Academic All-American. He broke the college’s records for wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and complete games. He also won the Herb Lauffer Scholarship/Leadership Award and the John Zahniser Male Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

 

 

 

Chris Shearer will be inducted into the Penn State Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 28.Chris Shearer, a 2002 graduate, was a starting catcher for the Penn State Behrend baseball team. As a senior, he helped lead the team to its first ECAC championship and a record 35 wins. He earned the team’s Golden Glove Award for a perfect fielding percentage that year.

 

 

 

Three teams also will be honored during the induction ceremony and dinner, which will be held in McGarvey Commons. The 1993-94 women’s basketball team will be honored for the 20th anniversary of its AMCC championship, and the 1978 men’s soccer team will be recognized on the 35th anniversary of its District 18 title win. The 2003 men’s soccer team, which won a program-record 14 games, will be honored for its AMCC championship win, which earned the program its first bid to the NCAA tournament.
