Greg Filbeck, the former director of the Black School of Business at Penn State Behrend, has been named vice chancellor and associate dean for academic affairs at the college, where he has taught since 2006.
ERIE, Pa. — Greg Filbeck, the former director of the Black School of Business at Penn State Behrend, has been named vice chancellor and associate dean for academic affairs at the college, where he has taught since 2006. He will oversee all aspects of the college’s academic portfolio, including academic planning, assessment and evaluation; strategic planning related to academics; shared governance with the college’s faculty; and the development of new academic programs.
“Greg brings more than 30 years of experience in teaching, research, outreach and academic administration to this role,” Chancellor Ralph Ford said. “His background — his academic preparation and industry experience, his research and extensive publications record, his understanding of Penn State, and his commitment to academic excellence — makes him uniquely qualified for this senior leadership position.”
Filbeck was appointed to the role following a national search, which was led by a committee steered by Jun Zhou, professor of mechanical engineering.
Filbeck has taught at Behrend since 2006, serving as the Samuel P. Black III Professor of Finance and Risk Management. He holds a doctorate in finance from the University of Kentucky, a master’s degree in applied statistics from Penn State, and a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics from Murray State University. He also has earned the CFA, FRM, CAIA, CIPM, PRM and FDP professional designations.
His publishing record includes 18 books and nearly 120 peer-reviewed journal articles. His community work includes leadership roles with Junior Achievement, the Erie Art Museum, the Society of Financial Services Professionals and Ashtabula’s Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum.
From 2017 to 2023, Filbeck served as director of Behrend’s Black School of Business, the only school in the region that is accredited by AACSB International. The Black School’s programs rank among the top 10% in the country for value and financial return, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and Workforce.
In 2023, Filbeck was named interim vice chancellor and associate dean for academic affairs. He launched a strategic task force for academic advising and served as the administrative liaison to Behrend’s Faculty Senate. He also managed the Behrend Honors Program, the Schreyer’s Honors Program at Behrend, the Center for E-Learning Initiatives and the Center for Teaching Initiatives, among other programs.
“As interim director, I was able to transfer my energy and efforts to champion the entire academic portfolio at Behrend,” he said. “I am excited to continue that work, advancing key initiatives in advising, student retention and faculty governance, while strengthening Behrend’s reputation for academic excellence and return on investment.”
Before joining Penn State Behrend, Filbeck served as senior vice president of Kaplan Schweser, the world leader in examination preparation for financial designations. In that role, he oversaw the development of all content and curriculum for the company.
Previously, Filbeck held academic appointments at Miami University (Ohio) and at the University of Toledo, where he also served as associate director of the Center for Family Business.
