Modern medicine would be impossible without the tests performed in clinical laboratories, and medical pathologists, technologists, and technicians are vital members of healthcare teams. Medical technologists are responsible for the accurate performance of laboratory work by health-care providers; they must conduct a full range of laboratory tests, from the most routine to the most complex, with little or no supervision, and operate computers, precision instruments, and other complex equipment.
The Medical Technology Option in Penn State Behrend's Biology bachelor's degree program prepares students for careers in clinical laboratories through a rigorous science program that culminates in a 12-month clinical phase at Saint Vincent Hospital.
A fixed number of spaces are available on a competitive basis of grade-point average and hospital approval. The B.S. degree in biology is awarded upon successful completion of the clinical study. Graduates also are eligible to take the national examination for certification and registry as medical technologists.
