Dr. Lisa Parker earned her Ph.D. from Kent State University in curriculum and instruction with a focus on literacy education. She is an associate professor of language and literacy education in the Elementary and Early Childhood Education program at Penn State Behrend.

Dr. Parker has more than fifteen years of experience teaching with Erie Public Schools as a classroom teacher, reading specialist, and reading facilitator. She has served in many leadership positions working with teachers and administrators on curriculum development, instruction, and assessment. She is also a literacy consultant providing support and instruction to elementary, middle, and secondary teachers across the United States both independently and through the Southern Regional Education Board. In addition, Dr. Parker has been an adjunct professor at Gannon, Kent State, and Edinboro Universities.

Dr. Parker's research interests include reading and writing and, specifically, how children and adolescents learn and interact through authentic literature and "making" within and across the content areas. Her most recent publications have appeared in Middle School Journal, Betwixt and Between, and Voices in the Middle. She is the director of the PennLake National Writing Project, which moved to Penn State Behrend in 2017.

Dr. Ciecierski-Madara conducts most of her research in urban settings across the country. Her research interests involve researching how children learn through award-winning authentic literature within and across the content areas. Her research also has a focus on writing. She is the director of the National Writing Project, which was recently moved to Penn State Behrend, and is conducting research on engaging preservice teachers in the National Writing project to promote engagement and sustainability.
