Walaa Ahmad

Deans’ Assistant, Deans’ Office at Erie County Community College of Pennsylvania. Walaa is a 2010 Communications and Media Studies graduate.

About her job: I assist with sending various communication, requiring a high degree of discretion, diplomacy, and time sensitivity; develop and maintain databases of faculty, keep track of class syllabi, and organize other academic and office documents/files; and other duties as assigned that further the mission of the Deans’ Office.

On roots: I’m originally from Eritrea, but I’ve been in the United States for more than twenty years now and consider myself an Eritrean American.

Family: Husband, Ahmed, and two dogs, Benji and Hachi.

BINGO!: I am a proud Behrend alumna and my fondest memories are the fun and laughter I shared with my peers at Midnight Bingo. I attended many bingo nights and I won twice!

On being a people-person: I enjoy working closely with people, especially supporting and guiding students. Commencement ceremonies are my favorite event. I enjoy witnessing the success and accomplishments of our students.

What doesn’t kill you: I believe that challenges make us stronger by strengthening our skills in problem solving and conflict resolution, as well as enhancing our critical thinking skills.

What she’s learned the hard way: Self-care is important. You must take good care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. When you are happy and healthy, you can take better care of others.

Recommended reading: Becoming by Michelle Obama.

Baby, she’s a star: I have a birthmark on my cheek that has the shape of a star; I love it.

Most interesting place she’s visited: Jordan and Spain.

If she had a whole day to herself: I’d pamper myself by going to a spa and getting a massage. Then, I’d relax at the beach with a glass of fresh fruit juice in my hand.
