1. DR. JOHN K. GAMBLE'S RETIREMENT LECTURE

Dr. John K. Gamble, Distinguished Professor of Political Science and International Law, has been teaching at Penn State Behrend since 1976. He will be retiring from Behrend at the end of this semester after finishing his final course, International Law and Organizations. After four decades as a distinguished teacher, a scholar, a leader, a mentor, and a friend for thousands of students, research colleagues, and faculty and staff members, he will commemorate his retirement on Saturday, April 4, in 117 Reed, with a lecture titled "Lessons from Political Science." Immediately preceding Dr. John K Gamble's lecture will be one from a different Dr. John K Gamble titled "Lessons from Quantum Computing." That Dr. Gamble is a Senior Quantum Engineer for Microsoft and is the son of Behrend's Dr. John K. Gamble. All are invited to attend both lectures, which will begin at 1:00 p.m. on April 4. A reception will follow.

 

2. MODEL UN TEAM SUCCEEDS AT MODEL NATO CONFERENCE

The Penn State Behrend Model United Nations team performed exceptionally well at the 35th International Model NATO Conference in Washington, D.C., earlier this month.

The Behrend students represented the United Kingdom and visited the British Embassy on February 13, where they received a detailed briefing on U.K. foreign/defense policy and U.K.-NATO relations.

The delegation of PSB MUN represented the U.K. in all six standing committees of NATO and came away with a Distinguished Delegation Award, which placed them 4th among 26 participating schools.

3. FACULTY IN THE NEWS

Caitlin Handerhan, Executive Director of the Behrend Public Policy Fund, spoke at an event led by Gisele Fetterman, wife of Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, to promote the 2020 U.S. Census earlier this month at Blasco Library in Erie. She was also a featured speaker at a recent event for Mercyhurst University's Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society titled "Insights Into Iowa," about this year's Iowa caucuses and the rest of the presidential nomination process.

Dr. Molly Monahan Lang, Assistant Teaching Professor of Sociology, presented a paper titled "Wellness in Medicine: Pressures and Constraints on Practitioners and Their Families" at the Sociologists for Women in Society Meeting in San Diego, Californi, on January 31.

Dr. Robert Speel, Associate Professor of Political Science, was this month interviewed for articles in the Erie Times-News and Sunbury Daily Item about the Democratic presidential primaries and for articles about President Trump's State of the Union Address in the Meadville Tribune and Sunbury Daily Item. He also wrote an article for the online Globe Post publication titled "What Past Impeachments Reveal About Trump's Future Legacy."

 

4. STUDENT GROUP NEWS

The Behrend Political Society is organizing a debate about abortion on Monday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m., location to be announced. The group meets on Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in 060 Kochel. To get involved contact President Sydni Holt at [email protected].

College Republicans continues to host Change My Mind tables on Fridays every other week. The table has recently been located on the Bruno's stage. The group also is planning a celebration event with guest speakers on March 28, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in the Dobbins special events room. The group meets Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in 114 Reed. College Democrats meets Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in 150 Reed. To get involved, contact President Tiffany Zinn at [email protected].
