2. WEBINAR: WASHINGTON, D.C.: THE 51ST STATE?

On Monday, February 22, at 6:00 p.m., Dr. Robert Speel, Associate Professor of Political Science, will present a webinar titled "Washington, D.C.; The 51st State?" via Zoom. The event is sponsored by the Penn State Behrend Public Policy Center. The presentation will last approximately 20 minutes, with another 20-25 minutes for questions. 3. STUDENT DEBATE: "ASSAULT WEAPONS," CANCEL/CONSEQUENCE CULTURE, WASHINGTON, D.C., STATEHOOD

On Wednesday, February 24, at 7:00 p.m., the Behrend Political Society will moderate a debate between College Republicans and College Democrats on three topics. The two groups will debate the possibility of statehood for Washington, D.C., whether "assault weapons" need to be more regulated (and what "assault weapons" are), and the controversies over "cancel culture" or "consequence culture." Everyone is invited to view the debate on Zoom.

4. MODEL UN STUDENTS WIN AWARDS AT INTERNATIONAL MODEL NATO CONFERENCE

Four Penn State Behrend Model United Nations students were recognized for their achievements at the International Model NATO 2021 organized by Howard University in Washington, D.C., during the weekend of February 12-14. The Penn State Behrend students led the delegations from Poland and Iceland.

  • Jeremiah Hessel - Outstanding Delegate Award
  • Bailey Rollage - Outstanding Delegate Award
  • Dylan Free - Distinguished Delegate Award

5. GRE PRACTICE EXAM

The ACPC is organizing a free Practice GRE virtual exam on March 6. The registration deadline is February 28. You can register through the ACPC events website.

6. STUDENT GROUP NEWS

  • Model United Nations students will host a High School Model United Nations conference this semester and an online "Ask a Republican" session to follow up last semester's "Ask a Democrat" session. The group meets Mondays at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom. To get involved, contact President Marissa Litzenberg at [email protected].
  • College Democrats meets Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom. On February 17, the group hosted visits from Pennsylvania State Representative Ryan Bizzarro, Judge Maria McLaughlin, candidate for Pennsylvania Supreme Court, and Judge David Spurgeon, candidate for Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court.   • College Republicans meets Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom. The group plans to invite political candidates to their online meetings this semester. To get involved, contact President Hunter Kellar at [email protected].
  • The Behrend Political Society will be working with the local chapter of the League of Women Voters this semester to organize online events about voter registration and voter education. The group will also help to moderate debates between College Republicans and College Democrats. To get involved, contact President Cole Troutner at [email protected].

7. FACULTY IN THE NEWS

  • Dr. Kilic Kanat, Associate Professor of Political Science, continues to write columns for Daily Sabah, an English-language news source from Turkey, including one this month titled "Biden's Bumpy Road in US Foreign Policy."
  • Dr. Robert Speel, Associate Professor of Political Science, was interviewed this month for comments about Trump's second impeachment trial in the Sunbury Daily Item and for the TT Swedish news agency published in newspapers across Sweden.
