MBA Students Earn Top Marks in ETS Major Field Test

Students in the Master of Business Administration program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, scored in the top 3 percent on the most recent ETS Major Field Test, a national assessment of university programs.

Students take the exam during their final year of study, after completing most of a program’s required courses. Many of the questions are based on case-study scenarios and require knowledge of marketing, management, finance and managerial accounting.

Students in the Sam and Irene Black School of Business at Penn State Behrend earned, on average, 265 of 300 possible points on the test. That put them in the 97th percentile when ranked against students from 260 other institutions that administered the exam.

“We are proud of this achievement and the recognition it bestows on the program,” said William H.A. Johnson, MBA director and associate professor of management at Penn State Behrend. “These scores demonstrate our students’ ability to think critically about business issues and not just regurgitate facts and figures in class.”

The test, which was developed by the same company that creates the SAT, GRE and AP exams, is revised every three years. The latest rankings apply to students who took the exam between September 2009 and June 2012. Penn State Behrend students scored in the top 10 percent on the previous version of the test.
