Greg Filbeck named director of Penn State Behrend's Black School of Business

ERIE, Pa. — Greg Filbeck, a faculty member at Penn State Behrend since 2006, has been appointed director of the Black School of Business. He brings to the position nearly 25 years of experience in teaching, research, outreach and academic leadership.

Filbeck, the Samuel P. Black III professor of finance and risk management, had served as interim director of the school since 2016. Prior to that, he was associate director and department chair for finance and economics.

“Greg brings vision, energy and leadership experience to this position,” Chancellor Ralph Ford said. “His record of accomplishment — most recently, in a relatively brief tenure in the interim role — positions him exceptionally well to lead the Black School of Business.”

Filbeck has received numerous school, college and University awards, including the Black School of Business’ Impact on Practice Award, in 2015; the Council of Fellows Excellence in Outreach Award, in 2012-13; the Outstanding iMBA Professor Award, in 2012; and the Council of Fellows Faculty Research Award, in 2010-11. He is the current president of the CFA Society of Pittsburgh and a past president of the Southern Finance Association.

“I strongly believe in the mission of the Black School of Business and have been an enthusiastic supporter of our goals for more than 10 years,” Filbeck said. “It is an honor to work with such talented colleagues, excellent students and supportive corporate partners as we advance and expand the mission and goals of our AACSB-accredited school.”

Filbeck holds a doctorate in finance from the University of Kentucky, a master’s in applied statistics from Penn State and a bachelor’s in engineering physics from Murray State University, in Murray, Kentucky. He also has earned the CFA, FRM, CAIA, CIPM and PRM professional designations.

He has published more than 90 peer-reviewed journal articles and eight books. His involvement in community organizations includes leadership roles at Junior Achievement, the Erie Playhouse and Ashtabula’s Hubbard House Underground Railroad Museum.

Before joining Penn State Behrend, Filbeck served as senior vice president of Kaplan Schweser, the world leader in examination preparation for financial designations. In that role, he oversaw the development of all content and curriculum for the company.

He previously held academic appointments at Miami University (Ohio) and at the University of Toledo, where he also served as associate director of the Center for Family Business.
