ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend wrestling team won its home opener against Waynesburg, taking eight of the night’s 10 matches. Heavyweight Matthew Caldwell, a freshman from Wheatfield, New York, earned his sixth pin of the season.
Behrend’s basketball and track and field teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:
Men’s basketball
Penn State Behrend 88, Mt. Aloysius 59
La Roche 56, Penn State Behrend 45
Matthew McDonough, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, scored a season-high 28 points against Mt. Aloysius. Tommy DiRienzo, a senior from Pittsburgh, scored 14 points against La Roche.
Women’s basketball
Penn State Behrend 90, Mt. Aloysius 62
La Roche 72, Penn State Behrend 64
Morgan Altavilla, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, scored 25 points against La Roche. Rachel Majewski, a junior from Erie, scored 17, with four assists. Alexis Furyes, a junior from Medina, Ohio, grabbed nine rebounds and scored 10 points against Mt. Aloysius.
Men’s track and field
Ryan Festa, a senior from Horsham, won the pole vault at Mount Union, clearing a height of 4.6 meters. Jason Seevers, a senior from North East, won the 1,000-meter run, finishing in 2:44.47.
Women’s track and field
Rylee Long, a freshman from Slippery Rock, won the triple jump at Mount Union, jumping a distance of 11.23 meters. She broke a school record, which had held for 17 years. Madison Kappeler, a senior from Cecil, won the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.38 meters — her personal best.
Wrestling
Penn State Behrend 45, Waynesburg 10
Sebastian Chiesa, a freshman from West Springfield, won by pin in the 125-pound bout. Martin Ohlsson, a freshman from Westfield, New York, won by pin in the 157-pound bout, and Lane Dellaquila, a freshman from Saint Marys, won by pin in the 165-pound bout.
