ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend softball team opened spring break play in Florida with four wins. The team hosts Hiram for the home-opener on March 17. Behrend’s baseball, basketball, volleyball, track and field, tennis, wrestling and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:
Men’s basketball
Juniata 93, Penn State Behrend 86
Penn State Behrend 81, Saint Vincent 64
The Lions lost to Juniata in double overtime in the Eastern College Athletic Conference semifinals. Tommy DiRienzo, a senior from Pittsburgh, scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. He scored 32 points against Saint Vincent.
Women’s basketball
Catholic 71, Penn State Behrend 55
The Lions exited the NCAA Division III championships with a loss to No. 11 Catholic. Morgan Altavilla, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, led the team with 22 points.
Baseball
Lebanon Valley 3, Penn State Behrend 1
Penn State Behrend 12, Wilkes 0
Anthony Slate, a senior from Hopewell, hit a triple in the seventh inning against Wilkes, scoring three runners. Pitcher Jeff Zick, a senior from Moon Township, gave up just one hit in 4.1 innings, earning five strikeouts.
Softball
Penn State Behrend 15, Elms 5
Penn State Behrend 6, Husson 1
Penn State Behrend 6, Hiram 1
Penn State Behrend 3, Wittenberg 1
Jocelyn McNany, a junior from Cranberry Township, hit a three-run home run against Husson and a two-run home run against Wittenberg. Maria Jones, a senior from Wilcox, hit a home run and an RBI double against Elms.
Men’s volleyball
Penn State Behrend 3, Wilson 0
Penn State Behrend 3, Mt, Aloysius 0
Mt. Union 3, Penn State Behrend 0
Owen Wienczkowski, a senior from Waterford, had 14 kills against Mt. Aloysius. Alex Jackson, a senior from Cochranton, had 37 assists, three block assists and three kills.
Men’s track and field
Samuel Hetrick, a senior from New Bethlehem, placed second in the high jump at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Indoor Championships, clearing a height of 2.02 meters.
Women’s track and field
Madison Kappeler, a senior from Cecil, tied for fourth in the pole vault at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Indoor Championships, clearing a height of 3.45 meters.
Men’s tennis
Penn State Behrend 8, Thiel 1
Jonathon Laier, a junior from Lansing, Michigan, won at No. 1 singles against Thiel, finishing 6-1, 6-0. Akash Sangha, a freshman from Milton, Ontario, won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The pair combined to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
Wrestling
Cole Neil, a freshman from St. Marys, placed sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Lycoming. He won by pin and major decision in the 133-pound bouts.
Women’s water polo
Redlands 11, Penn State Behrend 8
La Verne 19, Penn State Behrend 9
Cal Lutheran 21, Penn State Behrend 3
Occidental 9, Penn State Behrend 7
Susie Carrillo, a sophomore from Fresno, California, scored three goals on 11 shots against Redlands. Darragh Martin, a sophomore from Green Lane, scored three goals against La Verne.
