Behrend men’s tennis team wins AMCC championship

The Penn State Behrend men’s tennis team won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship on April 21, defeating Penn State Altoona, 5-4. The win earned Behrend its third consecutive championship.

The college’s baseball, softball, track and field and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Silvio Ionadi, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, hit a grand slam in the nightcap against Penn State Altoona. Hank Shaffer, a freshman from Saegertown, hit a three-run homerun in the fifth inning and a two-run homerun in the sixth.

Abby Tingley, a sophomore from Union City, pitched a one-hit shutout in the first game against Pitt-Bradford. She struck out eight batters. Jocelyn McNany, a junior from Cranberry Township, and Meghan Petitte, a sophomore from Sugarcreek, Ohio, hit homeruns in the nightcap against Penn State Altoona.

Men’s track and field

Dan Dabrowski, a senior from Harborcreek Township, won the discus event at the John Papa Invitational with a 51.86-meter throw — a school record. He won again at the Geneseo Quad Meet, where he completed a 51.85-meter throw. Samuel Hetrick, a senior from New Bethlehem, won the high jump at both events: He cleared a height of 1.98 meters at John Papa and 1.94 meters at Geneseo.

Women’s track and field

Madison Kappeler, a senior from Cecil, tied for first in the pole vault at the John Papa Invitational at Slippery Rock. She cleared a height of 3.60 meters — a personal best. Behrend’s 4x1 relay team — Peyton Grimm, Ivy Laffan, Rylee Long and Kappeler — placed second at the Geneseo Quad Meet, finishing in 51.12.

Luke Vunora, a freshman from Natrona Heights, won the deciding match in the AMCC championship. He won at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-4. Vunora and Jonathon Laier, a junior from Lansing, Michigan, were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Women’s water polo

Darragh Martin, a sophomore from Green Lane, scored three goals against Carthage at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Championships. Makenzie Rickerd, a freshman from Rockford, Michigan, scored three against Austin.
