Behrend men’s basketball team starts season with two wins

ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team opened its season with wins against Allegheny and Thiel. Tommy DiRienzo, a senior from Pittsburgh, scored a career-high 42 points against Thiel. He was 15-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Behrend’s soccer, cross-country, volleyball, wrestling and bowling teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Men’s soccer

Johns Hopkins 1, Penn State Behrend 0

The Lions exited the NCAA Division III tournament with an overtime loss to No. 15 Johns Hopkins. Goalkeeper Anthony Scalise, a freshman from North Huntington, made four saves.

Women’s soccer

Ithaca 1, Penn State Behrend 0

The Lions exited the NCAA Division III tournament with an overtime loss to Ithaca. The game’s lone goal came as a header off a corner kick at 7:21 of overtime.

Penn State Behrend 86, Allegheny 68

Mason Blankenberg, a junior from Ontario, New York, scored 25 points against Allegheny. Matthew McDonough, a junior from Pittsburgh, scored 17 points against Carnegie Mellon.

Women’s basketball

Penn State Behrend 80, St. John Fisher 64

Rachel Majewski, a senior from Erie, and Alaina Fabin, a freshman from Indiana, each scored 20 points against St. John Fisher. Madilyn Boyer, a junior from Saxonburg, scored 18 points against Chatham.

Men’s cross-country

Fifteenth (of 22 teams) at the NCAA Regional Championships

Lucas Boyd, a sophomore from North East, posted a season-best time in the 8K race, finishing in 26:47.8. He placed 43rd in a field of 166 runners.

Women’s cross-country

Sixteenth (of 21 teams) at the NCAA Regional Championships

Lindsey Hartle, a junior from Pittsburgh, finished the 6K race in 25:14.8. She placed 91st in a field of 154 runners.

Women’s volleyball

Cadence Jones, a freshman from North East, set the single-season record for kills, with 470. Brynne Smith, a freshman from Butler, had 37 assists and12 digs against Penn State Altoona.

Penn State Behrend 40, Washington & Jefferson 18

Matt Caldwell, a sophomore from North Tonawanda, New York, won two bouts in the 197-pound weight class. Rudy Brown, a freshman from Burgettstown, won twice at 157 pounds. Isaac Meyers, a freshman from McMurray, won twice at 125 pounds.
