Behrend volleyball team defeats Geneva at home opener

The Penn State Behrend men’s volleyball team won its home opener, defeating Geneva, 3-1, at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Invitational.

ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend men’s volleyball team won its home opener, defeating Geneva, 3-1, at the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Invitational. Cameron Schleicher, a junior from Meadville, had 16 kills and five digs.

The Lions lost to Chatham, 3-2, and to Thiel, 3-2.

Behrend’s basketball, swimming and diving, track and field, wrestling and bowling teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Men’s basketball

Pitt-Greensburg 77, Penn State Behrend 73

Alfred State 52, Penn State Behrend 49

The game against Alfred State included 32 lead changes and eight ties. Tommy DiRienzo, a senior from Pittsburgh, led the Lions with 15 points and seven rebounds. Mason Blankenburg, a junior from Ontario, New York, scored 22 points against Pitt-Greensburg.

Women’s basketball

Penn State Behrend 88, Pitt-Greensburg 60

Penn State Behrend 77, Alfred State 55

Rachel Majewski, a senior from Erie, scored 17 points against Alfred State and now holds the program record for points scored, with 1,597. Madilyn Boyer, a junior from Saxonburg, scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Men’s swimming and diving

Penn State Behrend 196, Nazareth 68

Penn State Behrend 170, Fredonia 61

Tim Compton, a senior from Pittsburgh, won the 200 freestyle (1:46.57) and the 400 IM (4:11.62) against Nazareth. Isaac Stoeckle, a freshman from Pittsburgh, won the 100 backstroke (53.68) and the 200 backstroke (2:04.26).

Kallie Smith, a freshman from Oil City, won the 100 breaststroke (1:12.62) and the 200 breaststroke (2:39.59) against Nazareth. Camryn Watters, a sophomore from Greensburg, won the 200 freestyle (2:05.74) and the 200 backstroke (2:12.64).

Men’s track and field

Ryan Festa, a senior from Horsham, won the pole vault event at the Houghton Highlander Invitational, clearing a height of 4.45 meters. Alex Cotton, a junior from Saxonburg, won the shot put, completing a 15.25-meter throw. Derek Hillhouse, a senior from Erie, won the high jump, clearing a height of 1.89 meters.

Women’s track and field

Madison Kappeler, a senior from Cecil, placed second in the pole vault at the Houghton Highlander Invitational, clearing a height of 3.20 meters. She also placed second in the long jump, with a distance of 5.10 meters.

Wrestling

St. John Fisher 26, Penn State Behrend 11

Cole Neil, a sophomore from St. Marys, won by decision in the 141-pound bout. Steffan Lynch, a sophomore from North East, won by technical fall at 149 pounds. Nolan Fenton, a sophomore from Kersey, won by decision at 197 pounds.

Women’s bowling

Emily Warrene, a junior from Tarentum, led the Lions in the traditional matches with a total pinfall of 364. She bowled a 192 in the first match.
