The Penn State Behrend baseball team won its second consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championship, defeating Alfred State, 8-2. The Lions will face Keystone in the first round of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament on Friday, May 16.
Daniel Boehme, a senior from Peters Township; Hank Shaffer, a sophomore from Saegertown; and Jack Baumgartel, a junior from Sewickley; were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Head Coach Paul Benim was named AMCC Coach of the Year.
Behrend’s softball, track and field, and tennis teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:
Softball
- Penn State Behrend 8, Pitt-Bradford 0
- Penn State Altoona 4, Penn State Behrend 3
Abby Tingley, a junior from Union City, pitched her second shutout of the season against Pitt-Bradford, giving up just three hits in six innings of work. Sierra Williams, a senior from Grove City, hit a home run. Karma Malcolm, a freshman from Beaver Falls, hit a home run – the first in her collegiate career – against Penn State Altoona.
Men’s track and field
Dominic Marino, a sophomore from Girard, won the 110-meter hurdles at SPIRE’s NCAA Last Chance meet, finishing in 15.88. Brandon Konieczki, a sophomore from Erie, won the long jump, clearing a distance of 6.71 meters. Dan Dabrowski, a senior from Harborcreek, won the discus event. He completed a 50.65-meter throw.
Nicolin Pierce, a sophomore from Erie, won the 800-meter race at the St. John Fisher’s Cardinal Last Chance Invitational, finishing in 1:55.17 – a career best. Tim Hamilton, a freshman from Winchester, Massachusetts, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing in 9:50.06.
Women’s track and field
Ivy Lafffan, a senior from Waterford, won the 400-meter race at SPIRE’s NCAA Last Chance Meet. She finished in 1:02.78. Ella McGowan, a freshman from Erie, placed second, finishing in 1:07.01.
Caroline Lewis, a freshman from Erie, placed second in the javelin at the St. John Fisher’s Cardinal Last Chance Invitational. She completed a 37.10-meter throw.
Women’s tennis
- Carnegie Mellon 4, Penn State Behrend 0
The Lions exited the NCAA Division III Championships with a loss to Carnegie Mellon, which entered the tournament as the No. 10 team. They ended the season with a 10-6 record.
