Removal of Oracle Java

Shortcut: /java

Oracle Java is a programming language used in many websites and software applications. Previously free, Oracle has changed its licensing program and will now charge a fee. The impact of this change affects the entire University since Oracle's Java was widely adopted.

At Behrend, Java was installed on 2,400 systems. If you're not sure if Java was installed on your system, there's a good chance that you may not need it. Generally, faculty may have had Java installed to support their instructional applications.

Due to the licensing change, Behrend IT needs your help to eliminate or reduce the impact this will have on your budget.

Currently, we have:

  • Removed Oracle Java from nearly 600 faculty/staff systems.
  • Removed Oracle Java from the non-instructional computer areas and replaced it with Amazon’s free version of Java called Corretto (version 8, 64-bit).
  • 1,800 systems in progress for the removal of Oracle Java (as of 10/7/21)

Faculty, we need your assistance in this process to avoid any surprises in class. We ask that you:

  1. Test your educational software as soon as possible by visiting WebLabs; then select a Java test group that corresponds to your software areas. The Weblab test groups for Amazon Java are:
    1. Java Test – Behrend Burke General
    2. Java Test – Behrend Campus General
    3. Java Test – Behrend Engineering
  2. If you encounter any issues with your software, please report them via email ([email protected]) or an IT Help Ticket and select "Oracle Java Removal".

Please reach out to Behrend IT if you have any questions or concerns. We want to work with you to provide the best solution for your needs.
