Penn State Behrend’s annual Trash 2 Treasure sale is a bargain for yard-sale shoppers and a boon to United Way of Erie County, which receives all proceeds from the sale. This year’s sale is Saturday, May 15.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced many of Penn State Behrend’s international students to rethink their approach to their coursework. “We thought it would be a few weeks,” said Laura Gil, who is from Colombia. “We had no idea.”
Penn State Behrend awarded 669 undergraduate and graduate degrees at two outdoor ceremonies on Saturday, May 8. The ceremonies were held at the Behrend soccer stadium, with COVID safety protocols in place for the duration of each program.

Penn State Behrend will offer a free college-prep summer program for high school students with financial need or interest in a field of study where they are underrepresented. Participants will earn college credit and have access to field trips, workshops and mentoring opportunities.
The Penn State Behrend softball team earned the No. 1 seed in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference tournament with a sweep of Mt. Aloysius. The team, which is 14-2 in conference play, will face the winner of the AMCC play-in game on May 9.
The winning writers of Penn State University Libraries Short Stories’ “A Night at the Circus” spring 2021 contest have been announced. Representing five Penn State campuses, the latest writing contest encouraged students, faculty and staff across the commonwealth to submit their best circus-themed creative writing in the form of short stories or poetry.
Penn State recognized its recipients for Student Organization and Involvement Awards and Student Service and Leadership Awards during the week of April 26.
A tutoring method developed at Penn State Behrend is now being tested at three other universities, where STEM instructors and campus writing centers are collaborating to help students write better technical reports. The National Science Foundation is supporting the project with a $588,000 grant.
