ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend track and field teams opened their outdoor seasons March 25 at the Cal U Early Bird Invitational. The men’s team won the shot put and the 110- and 400-meter hurdles; the women won the 800-meter relay.
The campus' volleyball, tennis, water polo, baseball and softball teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights.
Men’s volleyball

The conference win over Elmira was Behrend’s first defeat of the Soaring Eagles in program history. The scores were 25-19, 25-22, 24-26 and 25-21.

Clare Jeffreys, a sophomore from Erie, had three goals against Macalester. She scored with just two seconds remaining in the game, forcing an overtime period.

Men’s track and field
Matthew Grafton, a senior from Worthington, won the 110- and 400-meter hurdles at the Cal U Early Bird Invitational, the first event in the team’s outdoor season. Mitchell Obenrader, a senior from Fryburg, won the shot put.
Women’s track and field
The 800-meter relay team — Caitlin Plazony, a freshman from Fairview; Jenna Shelton, a sophomore from Cabot; Courtney Sargent, a sophomore from Erie; and Katelyn Hancock, a sophomore from Bethel Park — won their event at the Cal U Early Bird Invitational, finishing in 9:48.46.
