ERIE, Pa. — The track and field teams at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, won the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference men’s and women’s titles. The college swept the awards for male and female track and field athletes of the year. The college’s softball team won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title after the championship tournament was canceled due to rain.
Baseball
Penn State Behrend 6, Marietta 5
The Lions scored four runs in the ninth inning against Marietta. John Brittner, a sophomore from Zelienople, started the rally with a two-out pinch-hit single to left field.
Softball
The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship was canceled due to rain. As the top-seeded team, the Lions were declared the AMCC winners. They receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III tournament, which begins May 12.
Men’s track and field
First (of six teams) at the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championships
Mitchell Obenrader, a senior from Fryburg, won the shot put, hammer and discuss events. He set a personal best in the shot put, breaking his old school record, with a toss of 17.56 meters. Matthew Grafton, a senior from Worthington, won the 110 hurdles and helped the 4x100 relay team to a first-place finish. He placed second in the 100-meter dash and the javelin throw.
Women’s track and field
First (of six teams) at the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championships
Katelyn Hancock, a sophomore from Bethel Park, won the 800- and 1,500-meter races. She also ran in the 4x400 relay, which the Lions won. Haley Yenchik, a sophomore from Cecil, won the pole vault and triple jump events. She placed second in the long jump.
