Behrend runner qualifies for three events at ECAC championships

ERIE, Pa. — Rachel Pell, a runner at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, qualified for three events at the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships with a strong performance at Mt. Union. She placed second in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles.

The college’s basketball, volleyball, wrestling and swimming and diving teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Men’s basketball

Penn State Behrend 68, Pitt-Greensburg 57

Penn State Behrend 63, Medaille 58

The Lions have won their last five games. The team’s defense holds the top ranking in NCAA Division III.

Women’s basketball

Penn State Behrend 62, Pitt-Greensburg 57

Medaille 77, Penn State Behrend 67

Autumn Byes, a freshman from Erie, scored a season-high 22 points in the loss to Medaille. She added seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Men’s wrestling

Gannon 35, Penn State Behrend 19

Jacob Paulson, a freshman from Erie, won his 22nd match of the season. He wrestles in the 184-pound weight class. Jacob Parsons, a senior from Titusville, won by pin at 197 pounds.

Men’s volleyball

Penn State Behrend 3, Hiram 0

Penn State Behrend 3, D’Youville 0

Dillon Hildebrand, a sophomore from Red Lion, had a match-high 17 kills against Hiram. He scored 12 more against D’Youville.

Men’s swimming and diving

Penn State Behrend 142, St. Vincent 138

Penn State Behrend 151, Malone 118

Mark Patterson, a junior from North Huntingdon, won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle against Malone. He also swam in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, which the Lions won. Matthew Kuchcinski, a freshman from North East, won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events against St. Vincent.

Women’s swimming and diving

Malone 156, St. Vincent 88

Malone 154, Penn State Behrend 79

Gwendolyn Lowery, a senior from Bellefonte, won the 100 butterfly and the 100 freestyle against Malone. She was second in the 200 individual medley.

Men’s track and field

The Lions won the 800 relay at the University of Mt. Union. The team – Kurt Eberhardt, Greg Graf, Grant Rodgers and Devin Ross – finished in 1:34.17 and qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships.

Women’s track and field

Rachel Pell, a senior from Elizabeth, qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference championships in three events at the University of Mt. Union. She placed second in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles.
