John Roth, professor of engineering at Penn State Behrend, was recently recognized with a 2019 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Named for the University’s seventh president, this university-wide award is presented annually to faculty members who have devoted substantial effort to and developed a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.

To be considered, nominees must have undergraduate teaching as a major portion of their duties, have been full-time faculty members for a minimum of three years and have the rank of assistant professor, associate professor or professor.
Roth teaches in the areas of manufacturing processes, materials science, dynamic systems and adaptive signal processing. His research has included collaborations with Ford Motor Company, Boeing, SKF, MS Autotech and the U.S. Department of Energy, among others.
“Professor Roth is such a deserving choice for the Atherton Award,” said Timothy Kurzweg, director of the School of Engineering at Penn State Behrend. “He is passionate towards education, always striving to deliver the highest quality instruction to our Behrend students.”
