Behrend athletic events canceled through the academic year

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics has canceled all athletics events, including events at Penn State Behrend, through the academic year, due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. The NCAA will extend a year of eligibility to student-athletes whose spring seasons were cut short.

Penn State Behrend’s baseball, softball, tennis and water polo teams were in action last week, before events were canceled. Here are the highlights:

Baseball

  • Dominican 8, Penn State Behrend 3

  • Penn State Behrend 10, Delaware Valley 5
  • Marymount 10, Penn State Behrend 3
  • Penn State Behrend 10, North Central 2

Josh Wagner, a sophomore from South Park, built a 10-game hitting streak during the team’s spring break games in Fort Pierce, Florida. Zach Bowen, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, batted 4-for-5 against North Central, with three RBIs.

Softball

The Lions traveled to Clermont, Florida, for a series of spring break games. Alayna Derzak, a senior from Seven Fields, pitched a shutout against Keuka, and Mackenzie McIntire, a junior from Stoneboro, recorded three RBIs on two hits against Wheaton.

Men’s tennis

  • Webster 5, Penn State Behrend 4
  • Catholic 8, Penn State Behrend 1
  • Penn State Behrend 7, Norwich 2
  • Penn State Harrisburg 5, Penn State Behrend 4

Mitchell May, a sophomore from Erie, and Matthew Brown, a freshman from Ovieda, Florida, won all three of their doubles matches. May also won three matches at No. 4 singles.

Women’s water polo

  • Penn State Behrend 13, Caltech 10

Selena Hughes, a freshman from Carlsbad, California, scored five goals and added an assist. Shannon Young, a freshman from Roseville, California, scored four.
