This semester, students in Dr. Mary Beth Pinto’s MKTG 344 Buyer Behavior class will be acting as marketing analysts for the Barber National Institute (BNI) and the organization’s annual adventure run — The Beast on the Bay.
Google Glass had nothing on the VuMan 3, a portable computer worn by Marines at Camp Pendleton in 1993. The system – a processor worn on a belt and wired to a headband display – led mechanics through a 50-page inspection checklist for amphibious tractors.
The checklist had 600 data points, which took six hours to complete. A second Marine then had to transcribe the notes.

Thanks to a new student-developed website, members of the Penn State Behrend community are able to log online and exchange or purchase relevant textbooks, appliances, furniture and school supplies. The site, titled StudentTrade.net, also allows property owners to post and update student rentals.
U.S. News & World Report ranks Penn State’s online master of business administration program the seventh-best in the nation, sharing a position with Carnegie Mellon University. U.S. News evaluated the programs using four criteria: faculty credentials, student engagement, admissions selectivity and student services and technology.
Every scientific research project begins with a question. But in the case of a project by Dr. G. William Baxter, associate professor of physics, it began with a mild case of heartburn.
“I was trying to shake some antacids out of the plastic container, but they were all clogged up in the top,” Baxter said. “I wondered what caused them to jam like that and if a different shape of pill or container would work better.”
The Young People’s Chorus of Erie, a youth outreach program of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will hold open auditions later this month.
Open rehearsals give young people between the ages of 7–18 the opportunity to attend a rehearsal and learn about YPC Erie. The chorus is northwest Pennsylvania’s only comprehensive youth choral music program and children from 35 different schools participate.
Penn State World Campus was ranked highly in U.S. News & World Report’s 2015 Best Online Programs, including No. 1 for best online bachelor’s programs.
Penn State Behrend is funding more than $41,000 in undergraduate research this spring. Sixty-two students will participate in the studies, working directly with faculty mentors.
Students in the Black School of Business will study the effectiveness of product placement in massively multiplayer online role-playing games, such as “Splinter Cell” and “Rainbow Six: Lockdown.”
