December 20, 2011—As is tradition at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, the address at the fall commencement ceremony held on Friday, Dec. 16, was given by a Penn State Behrend faculty member. Dr. Greg Filbeck, professor of finance and the Samuel Patton Black Chair in Insurance and Risk Management, shared the remarks below with the college's 309 graduates and their guests.

December 13, 2011 – Most people are familiar with how vending machines work. They’ve been using them for their entire lives. But what about reverse vending machines?
Dr. Edwin Masteller, Penn State Behrend professor of biology emeritus and volunteer curator of the Natural History Museum at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center, was a recipient of the 2012 John C. Oliver Environmental Leadership Award.
Students in the new Industrial Engineering major at Penn State Behrend will take a wider view. Their studies, which can lead to jobs in health care, manufacturing, transportation and inventory control, teach them to pinpoint inefficiencies in workflow and other interconnected business and manufacturing systems.
