Behrend Lions set career records in wins over Mt. Aloysius and Alfred State

ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend men’s basketball team has used a balanced offense to build a 15-2 record: Andy Niland, a senior from Fairview, scored a career-high 31 points against Alfred State. Malike Brinson, a senior from Erie, set his own career mark with 20 points against Mt. Aloysius.

The college’s bowling, wrestling, and swimming and diving teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Men’s basketball

Penn State Behrend 72, Alfred State 61

Penn State Behrend 58, Mt. Aloysius 51

Dan Wanker, a senior from Pittsburgh, scored 14 points against Alfred State. He scored 10 more against Mt. Aloysius.

Women’s basketball

Mt. Aloysius 48, Penn State Behrend 44

Penn State Behrend 57, Westminster 55

Kara Haslett, a freshman from Baden, scored a team-high 19 points against Westminster. Nicole Boyer, a senior from Blairsville, scored a season-high 13 against Mt. Aloysius.

Men’s swimming and diving

Penn State Behrend 101, Pitt-Bradford 47

The 400-meter medley relay team — Justin Heller, a freshman from Franklin; Charlie Nesbit, a freshman from Grove City; Jacob Schmidt, a sophomore from Erie; and James Connolly, a freshman from Allentown — won that event, finishing in 3:50.89. Connolly also won the 100-meter freestyle, finishing in 49.59.

Women’s swimming and diving

Penn State Behrend 69, Pitt-Bradford 21

Marcella Puglia, a freshman from Beaver Falls, won the 1,000-meter freestyle, finishing in 11:20:03. Madi Buckley, a freshman from Huntingdon County, won the 200-meter freestyle, finishing in 2:17.68

Wrestling

Gannon 38, Penn State Behrend 3

Levko Higgins, a sophomore from Palmyra, won by decision at 197 pounds. It was his 14th win of the season.

Women’s bowling

Hilbert 2, Penn State Behrend 1

Brianna Lundy, a junior from North Huntingdon, bowled a 220 in the third match against Hilbert. She led the Lions with a score of 163 in each of the first two matches.
