Behrend water polo player sets career record for goals scored

ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend women’s water polo team won its first game of the season, beating Utica 14-8. Lauren Wood, a senior from Vernon Hills, Illinois, set a school record for career goals, with 159.

The college’s baseball, softball, wrestling, tennis, and track and field teams also were in action last week. Here are the highlights:

Kristen Kargol, a senior from Saegertown, hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning against Ohio Northern, giving the Lions the lead.

Men’s track and field

Braeden Smith, a sophomore from Erie, placed eighth in the high jump at the NCAA Division III track-and-field championships. He jumped a height of 2.06 meters, earning All-American honors. Jack Georgetson, a sophomore from Aliquippa, placed 15th in the pole vault.

Wrestling

Jake Paulson, a sophomore from Erie, lost twice at the NCAA Division III wrestling championships in Roanoke, Virginia. Paulson, who wrestles in the 184-pound weight class, was the first Behrend wrestler to advance to the championships. He finished the season with a 28-5 record.

Yiwen Liu, a freshman from Hong Kong, won his first collegiate match with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles against Penn State Harrisburg. Mitchell May, a freshman from Erie, and Noah Colvin, a junior from Warren, won at No. 2 doubles against Moravian.

Mackensie Robie, a freshman from Girard, made a season-high 14 saves in the loss to Grove City. She had seven saves, one steal and two assists against Utica.
