Responsibilities of University Police

The major responsibilities of the University Police are to:

  • Reduce the opportunities for the commission of some crimes through providing educational programs to the community and preventive patrol.
  • Identify violators of the laws and University regulations and, where appropriate, refer such violators to the legal or administrative systems and participate in subsequent proceedings.
  • Aid individuals who are in danger of physical harm or who cannot care for themselves.
  • Promote the protection of constitutional guarantees to all members of the community while providing an educational function as to the rights and responsibilities of individuals in a community.
  • Assist in the educational mission of the University through cooperation with colleges and by providing direct instruction to members of the community to enhance safety in the workplace, living areas, and recreational areas.
  • Resolve conflict between individuals or groups that may, without intervention, escalate to criminal behavior.
  • Facilitate the movement of persons and vehicles on the campus and promote traffic safety through education, enforcement, and traffic engineering.
  • Manage the University's parking resources to provide reasonable parking for members of the University community and visitors at campuses where responsibility for the administration of the parking program is assigned to members of the University Police.
  • Reduce environmental hazards to persons and property through inspection, investigation, and prevention; and maintain an effective program for environmental health.
  • Participate in the identification and recovery of lost or stolen property and return it to the rightful owner.
  • Enforce parking regulations so as to ensure that employees, students, and visitors who have been accorded parking privileges are able to use the facilities as assigned.
  • Create and maintain a feeling of safety in the community.
  • Promote and preserve order.
  • Provide other University departments with timely, appropriate information essential to their function.
  • Provide other services on an emergency basis.
  • Provide assistance to victims of crimes through early intervention, referrals, or accompaniment to criminal or administrative proceedings.
  • Promote the protection of persons and property through the efficient and effective applications of modern physical security strategies and techniques, and through the use of electronic security countermeasures.
