Ihab Ragai, an assistant professor of engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Just 2 percent of the society’s 140,000 professional members earn the distinction.
The Brown-Urioste-Canellakis Trio will bring its smooth, classical music sounds to Penn State Behrend on Thursday, Nov. 8, when they perform as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. The performance takes place at noon in McGarvey Commons, in the college’s Reed Union Building. Admission is free, and reserved parking for audience members will be available in the Reed lot.
The Pennsylvania Sea Grant College Program has received the 2018 John C. Oliver III Environmental Leadership Award, which is presented annually by the Tom Ridge Environmental Center Foundation. Ridge, a former Pennsylvania governor and the first secretary of Homeland Security, spoke at the Oct. 12 awards presentation.
Penn State Behrend’s cross-country teams placed second at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships. Zachary Tingley led the men with a fourth-place overall finish; Riley Crissman finished third overall in the women’s field.
Penn State Behrend alumnus Peter Grant has studied mayflies for more than 40 years. Their adult form is a bit unusual, he says: They have no digestive system.
A life-changing experience led alumna Ashlyn Kelly to join, and then lead, the Random Acts of Kindness club, which works anonymously to promote goodwill at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
“Star of Wonder,” this year's holiday concert from the Young People's Chorus of Erie, will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 at Our Lady of Peace Church in Erie. Musical selections will focus on stars and celestial bodies, as well as the theme of “wonder.” Several holiday favorites also will be performed.
“We Gather Here Together,” the fall concert from the Choirs of Penn State Behrend, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in the college’s Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.
A total of 55 seventh-graders from the Youngsville School District attended 21st Century Kids, held Friday, Oct. 19, at Penn State Behrend. The program brings youth from rural populations to the college, allowing them to experience a college setting and participate in hands-on STEM workshops taught by Penn State Behrend faculty members and leaders from local STEM-focused businesses.
With energy demands rising, researchers at Penn State Behrend and the University of Tabriz, Iran, have completed an algorithm — or approach — to design more efficient wind farms, helping to generate more revenue for builders and more renewable energy for their customers.
