Natalie Splinter traveled more than 1,000 miles to participate in Penn State Behrend's commencement ceremony. Splinter, a World Campus graduate with a degree in finance, had never before been to Pennsylvania.
Charlotte Marr de Vries, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Penn State Behrend, completed a 10-week faculty fellowship at NASA's George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. She worked with a team that studied water and air systems for a proposed space flight to Mars.
Penn State Behrend’s SAE Club team finished first in this year’s International Supermileage Challenge, held June 7-8 at the Eaton Corporation’s Marshall Proving Grounds test track in Michigan. The competition challenges teams to create vehicles that squeeze the most mileage out of a single tank of high-octane gasoline. The Behrend vehicle traveled 3,013 miles on one gallon of gas, which was a new United States record.
The Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has announced its 2018 performance schedule. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Free hot dogs and snacks will be served during the performances.
In May, Mickie MacNicol graduated from Penn State Behrend with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. She will work as an orthopedic nurse at Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie beginning in July, but the truth is that she started to make a difference and help others a long time ago.
The May 28 episode of the TLC celebrity genealogy program "Who Do You Think You Are?" featured Joseph Beilein, assistant professor of history at Penn State Behrend. He shared historical documents with the actress Megan Mullally, from "Will & Grace."
Ann Scott, community outreach manager for Erie Insurance Group, has been named vice chair of the board of directors of the Penn State Behrend Council of Fellows. The council advises Chancellor Ralph Ford and other campus leaders on issues related to economic development and regional need.
More than 1,000 Erie County fifth-grade students attended the Children's Water Festival, held May 17 at Penn State Behrend. The day-long event is designed to educate students about the importance of water, including ground water, surface water, watersheds, water quality and water conservation, through dynamic, hands-on activities.
“The Many Threads of Quilting,” a quilt exhibition that opened April 28 at the Erie Art Gallery, served as the senior capstone project for Victoria Alcorn, who graduated this month from Penn State Behrend with a degree in arts administration. For the project, Alcorn curated the exhibition with the work of regional quilters.
The Behrend Medallion, Penn State Behrend’s foremost recognition of an individual who has brought honor to his or her profession and community, was presented to Thomas B. Hagen, chairman of the board of Erie Insurance Group, at the Glenhill Appreciation Dinner at Penn State Behrend on May 23. The college's last four leaders attended the event.
