The Behrend Medallion, Penn State Behrend’s foremost recognition of an individual who has brought honor to his or her profession and community, was presented to Thomas B. Hagen, chairman of the board of Erie Insurance Group, at the Glenhill Appreciation Dinner at Penn State Behrend on May 23. The college's last four leaders attended the event.
Mary Connerty, senior lecturer in English and director of the English Language Learning program, has received a 2018 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Kathy Noce, associate teaching professor of MIS and director of the college’s Partnership Erie outreach program, has been selected as one of Penn State’s 2018 Achieving Women by the University’s Commission for Women.
Timothy Kurzweg, a longtime administrator and Drexel University professor, has been selected as director of the School of Engineering at Penn State Behrend, beginning July 1.
Faculty, graduate students and alumni from the Harold and Inge Marcus Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering at Penn State were recognized for their accomplishments at the 2018 Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers Annual Conference and Expo in Orlando, Florida.
The Penn State Behrend baseball team ended its 2018 season with a 25-17 record (12-6 in conference). Back-to-back four-run innings knocked the team out of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs.
Penn State alumnus Vincent J. Intrieri gave the commencement address at Penn State Behrend's spring commencement ceremony, held May 4 at Erie Insurance Arena. Intrieri is the founder and CEO of VDA Capital Management LLC. He earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Penn State Behrend in 1984 and is a certified public accountant.
Alicyn M. Rhoades, an assistant professor in the Penn State Behrend School of Engineering, gave the faculty address at the college’s spring commencement ceremony, held May 4 at Erie Insurance Arena.
The Yahn Planetarium, which operated as the Erie Planetarium since 1959, relocated to Penn State Behrend in 2014 and has become a staple of the college’s School of Science. More than 11,000 visitors enjoyed a show at the planetarium in 2017.
John Champagne, professor of English and chair of the Global Languages and Cultures program at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, has been named Penn State Laureate for the 2018-19 academic year. As laureate, he will tour Pennsylvania to ask probing questions about — and offer a historical perspective on — the role of the artist in times of political turmoil.
More than 200 seventh-and eighth-grade girls attended Math Options Career Day, held May 8 at Penn State Behrend. The daylong program, now in its 22nd year, was designed to introduce young girls to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics — fields that generally are dominated by men.
