Penn State Behrend track and field athlete Haley Yenchik set a school record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.61 meters at the Slippery Rock University Open. Yenchik, a junior from Cecil, also cleared a height of 3.36 meters at the Behrend Invitational, winning the event.
More than 150 seventh-graders from Beaty-Warren Middle School attended 21st Century Kids, held Friday, April 20, at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. The bi-annual program brings youth from rural populations to the college, allowing them to experience a college setting and participate in hands-on STEM workshops taught by Penn State Behrend faculty members.
The scholarly works of more than 40 faculty members were on display Wednesday, April 18, at the Faculty Publication Reception at Penn State Behrend. The reception, held at the college’s John M. Lilley Library, gave faculty members the opportunity to display work published since 2016.
The Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development has selected Penn State Behrend as a lead partner for developing business and market opportunities created by a $6 billion Shell Pennsylvania Chemicals project in Beaver County.
Penn State Behrend senior industrial engineering major Mohamed Badawy and Max Morrow, a senior finance and mathematics, took third place in the recent Simio Student Case Competition. More than 250 teams from 36 colleges and 13 countries participated in the competition.
The list of 2018 Erickson Discovery Grants has been released, and 72 students from Penn State campuses will have their work bolstered by a $3,500 grant from the Office of Undergraduate Education.
Penn State Behrend Chancellor Ralph Ford and his wife, Melanie Ford, a faculty member in the School of Engineering and director of Youth Education Outreach at the college, led the creation of a $100,000 endowment for students with financial need. The first scholarships were awarded in the fall of 2017.
Pitcher Jack Herzing set a Penn State Behrend record for career strikeouts, with 257. Herzing, a senior from St Marys, fanned the first nine batters in a game against Alfred State. He struck out 16 before the game ended.
A study of shoreline changes at Presque Isle State Park and an effort to barcode the DNA of pest scale insects from Southeast Asia were among the 134 research projects students presented at the Penn State Behrend Sigma Xi Undergraduate Student Research and Creative Accomplishment Conference.
