More than 160 girls from nearly 30 high schools attended Women in Engineering Day, a youth outreach program at Penn State Behrend that is designed to introduce high school girls to engineering fields and careers through a series of hands-on activities. This year marked the 14th year for the event, which was held Friday, Nov. 1.
21st Century Kids was held Thursday, Oct. 24, at Penn State Behrend. The program brings youth from rural populations to the college, allowing them to experience a college setting and participate in hands-on STEM workshops taught by Penn State Behrend faculty members and leaders from local STEM-focused businesses.
A familiar face has been sitting on a bench at the Breakwall near Penn State Behrend’s Ben Lane Plaza: a life-size statue of the Nittany Lion mascot, legs crossed, with room on the bench for a friend.
The Penn State Behrend women’s cross country team won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference championships, with runners placing in the top three spots. The men’s team placed second.
Penn State’s Campus Arts Initiative will unveil Lauren Herzak-Bauman’s site-specific artwork, “Colorwalk,” at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at Penn State Behrend. A meet-the-artist event will be held at the “Colorwalk” site, outside the Reed Union Building.
Dr. Priscilla Hamilton, a 1978 graduate of Penn State and a member of the board of directors of Penn State Behrend’s Council of Fellows, is being honored as one of 16 Penn State Alumni Fellows for 2019.
Charles Stanish, a 1979 anthropology alumnus, and his wife have created an endowment to encourage faculty members to include students on research projects outside of North America.
Harvard University professor Avi Loeb discussed the search for alien life during a Speaker Series program at Penn State Behrend. "It is likely that we have not yet encountered extraterrestrial life because we are not significant enough for them to want or need to talk to us," he said. "We are like ants to them, maybe, and they are looking for something else."
Accordionist Merima Ključo and guitarist Miroslav Tadić make up Aritmia, and they will bring their unique sound to Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, Nov. 6, to perform as part of Music at Noon: The Logan Series. The performance will take place at noon in McGarvey Commons, in the college’s Reed Union Building.
Innovators often think big when solving problems and creating solutions. A number of Penn State Behrend students recently started to think really big as they used the college's Innovation Commons to design and built a large-format 3D printer from scratch.
