How much math/statistics do I need?

You don't need advanced math background. This program will teach you the skills need. Many successful Black Belts started with basic math background and learned the rest in the program.

Will a Black Belt help my career?

Yes. Black Belts are in high demand in operations, quality, continuous improvement, and leadership roles. The credential + capability = competitive advantage.

How is this different from Agile?

Agile is a software / product development methodology that is often applied to problem solving. The Black Belt program is a disciplined problem-solving approach that works across any domain and can be applied in short timelines. Many organizations use both. You'll understand the difference and the value of each.

What if I want to go further after my Black Belt?

Your program positions you for Master Black Belt certification and advanced problem-solving methodologies like LSS-21. The foundation opens doors.

How long does a Black Belt program take?

Typical programs run for 7 months depending on structure and prior experience. Check with Penn State or your chosen program for specifics.

Is it worth the time and investment?

Do I have to have project approved by my manager at work?

A project is required for the Black Belt certification.  It works best when it is aligned with your company or your manager but is not required. There are some requirements around all projects.  If in doubt, please contact us for a conversation.

What happens if I miss a class?

Life happens; we understand. In most instances, you will have the opportunity to make up the credit for a class.  There are some classes that require prior approval to receive credit (such as the Presentation classes).

My schedule varies considerably.  Do you offer a self-paced webinar option?

We only offer real-time virtual classes at this time. To ensure an open discussion of class material including projects, we do not record the classes at this time. 

Is there a Final Exam that determines whether or not I will get my Black Belt?

Throughout the program, there are practice exams and a final exam.  Course completion and Six Sigma Black Belt certification depends upon your final grade (a C or higher) which is a composite of your class participation, project, presentation, the exams, and other components.

Do the courses have to be taken in order?

The Program is progressive; each course includes material learned in the previous courses, as well as your project progression. They should be taken in order.

Are there books required for this program?

There are two books required for the course: Practical Definitions for the Working Professional, and this book (High Performance Lean Six Sigma in the 21st Century). These help the students quickly understand key concepts and references, as well as a reference after the program. An additional bibliography is available to help students in their specific area of problem-solving. 

Is there homework required for the course?

Other than your project work and presentation preparation, it is intended that you have no additional work to perform outside of class time. Throughout the program, time is allocated for you to focus on individual work and discussion to support you making the best use of your time.
