John Roth, professor of engineering at Penn State Behrend, was recently recognized with a 2019 George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching. Named for the University’s seventh president, this university-wide award is presented annually to faculty members who have devoted substantial effort to and developed a record of excellence in undergraduate teaching.
In April, Scott Sada, who graduated from Penn State Behrend with a plastics engineering technology degree, hit his 82nd double against Medaille to become the NCAA Division III all-time leader in career doubles. He would add eight more before the season ended.
The Smith Carillon Concert Series at Penn State Behrend has announced its 2019 performance schedule. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Free hot dogs and snacks will be served during the performances.
Penn State Behrend is leading a coordinated effort to protect and preserve Wintergreen Gorge, a Natural Heritage Area on and adjacent to the Behrend campus. The project will protect wildlife and make the existing trails more sustainable while improving public access to the gorge.
More than 50 students from Warren County School District attended the inaugural Inspiring Bright Futures program May 22 at Penn State Behrend. The program brings high school students from rural populations to the college, so they can experience a higher education setting and participate in STEM workshops.

Beginning June 10, The Young People’s Chorus of Erie, a youth outreach program of Penn State Behrend, will embark on a special tour that will see the choristers travel through Morgantown, West Virginia; Dayton, Ohio; and Louisville, Kentucky.
For her arts administration senior capstone project, Penn State Behrend student Olivia Coghe recently planned Artsapalooza, a one-day arts festival and craft show held at the college. The event, which was held April 26, featured more than 15 artist and artisan vendors, live musical performances and craft activities.
Penn State Behrend will host the 2019 International Advanced Manufacturing Research Conference — the foremost international forum for applied research and manufacturing innovation — from June 10 to 14 at Erie’s Bayfront Convention Center.
A total of 215 seventh-and eighth-grade girls from 32 school districts attended Math Options Career Day, held May 7 at Penn State Behrend. The daylong program, now in its 23rd year, is designed to introduce young girls to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics — fields that generally are dominated by men.
